Universal Display Corporation Acquires BASF’s OLED IP Assets

Universal Display Corporation, enabling energy-efficient displays and lighting with its UniversalPHOLED® technology and materials, announced today that through its wholly-owned subsidiary UDC Ireland Limited, it has acquired the OLED Intellectual Property (IP) assets of BASF SE, the world's leading chemical company. Representing 15 years of research and development, the assets include over 500 issued and pending patents around the world, in 86 patent families. Largely consisting of phosphorescent materials and technologies, BASF’s OLED portfolio has an average lifetime of 10 years. The purchase price for the acquisition is approximately EUR 87 million (US $96.26 million).

A lawsuit filed by Nichia against Tachibana Eletech and E&E Japan, which companies imported and/or sold Blue LEDs manufactured by a Taiwanese company, Everlight Electronics, the Tokyo District Court found that the importation/sale of those Blue LEDs by E&E and Tachibana constituted infringement of Nichia's patent. However, Everlight refuted that it respects the court’s judgement as JP3972943 expired on July 6, 2014. Therefore, the infringement will not have negative impact on the company’s products.

Projected penetration rate for small size OLED: As Samsung started to adopt OLED in all models of its own brand and the exportation to Chinese labels, the strategies has pushed the penetration rate to 20% in 2016. Samsung has reached full production capacity while other display manufacturers are unable to satisfy the specification of high-end mobile models, OLED’s penetration rate will only rise to approximately 25% from 2017 to 2018. As Taiwanese, Japanese and Chinese manufacturers all strive to catch up and the expansion of Samsung and LG Display, it’s expected that OLED could take over one third of the smartphone display market, providing that Apple didn’t enter the OLED market.   Large size OLEDs cannot pose threat to LEDs: The main obstacle of small size OLED lies in the demand of high pixels per inch (ppi) while in large size it’s limited by yield rate and price. Though LG Display strived to lower the price of OLED TV and adopted the same strategy in selling its display panels to other manufacturers, prices of OLED TVs that are twice higher than LED ones still saw slow progress. It’s projected that OLED TVs will only account for 0.5% in the TV market and rise to 5% as of 2020.

Kyushu University TADF OLED Spin-off Kyulux Acquires US $13.5M Finance

Kyulux, an advanced materials startup that is commercializing the next generation of OLED display and lighting technology known as TADF (Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence), announced today that Samsung Venture Investment Corporation took the lead in a $13.5 million (¥1.5 Billion Japanese Yen) Series A round of venture funding.  Participating in the round were global OLED panel manufacturers including Samsung Display, LG Display, Japan Display and JOLED, top tier Japanese venture capital funds, and a Japanese Government affiliated venture fund. Kyushu University also announced the transfer of a large portfolio of TADF related patents and equity participation by the university in the financing.

Osram Elaborates upon its Three-pillar Strategy

At an analyst day, Osram unveiled further details of its three-pillar strategy presented in November last year and of the innovation and growth initiative. In all its three pillars, the lighting company wants to benefit even more from the potential of semiconductor-based technologies and will make appropriate investments in the coming years. In the Specialty Lighting (SP) business, Osram is increasing the focus of its automotive business on LED-based products and the system business as well as investments in new technologies such as laser and OLED. In the Lighting Solutions & Systems (LSS) segment, Osram will expand its product portfolio for Smart Cities and Smart Buildings applications in the years to come, thus taking account of rising urbanization. In the LED components business (Opto Semiconductors, OS), Osram aims to become the cost leader thanks to its lead in technology, economies of scale, and factor cost benefits from the planned 6-inch LED chip plant in Kulim, Malaysia. The plant will be the largest of its kind. “We are well on our way to becoming a high-tech company.
