Osram Launches IR LED for Camera Applications

With the new SFH 4715AS and SFH 4716AS Osram Opto Semiconductors has increased the output of its IR Oslon Black family – for the second time in six months. This has been achieved by combining the latest chip design with an optimized package and the Nanostack technology, in which each chip has two emission centers. Depending on the type of external optics and the particular application, the infrared light emitting diodes (IREDs) can provide illumination over a distance of more than 100 meters, which make them even better light sources for many camera-based applications.

Iris Capturing Under Bright Sunlight Conditions

Left and right images are taken under identical environments of more thanover 100,000 lux. The left iris image was captured with a conventional iris camera, whereas the right image was with IriTech's outdoor capturing technology integrated camera. The left iris image shows reflections that will likely degrade the matching accuracy, whereas the right image does not have any reflections.

Osram New IR LED Boosts Electro-Optical Efficiency by 48%

The new Oslon Black SFH 4715A boasts a typical electro-optical efficiency of 48 percent – a figure never before achieved with opto-electronic elements – and thanks to the associated huge reduction in cooling requirements, it has a much longer service life, too. In other words, this latest member of the infrared LED (IRED) family is reaching previously unattainable figures. But this is not the only new product in the Oslon Black family from Osram Opto Semiconductors: The SFH 4716A has a beam angle of 150° permitting particularly narrow-angled imaging for camera-based lighting applications by using reflector optics.

LED Pioneer Jerry Woodall Turns to Clean Energy

You might not know what "lattice-matched heterojunctions" are, but if you stopped at a new stoplight, played a DVD or used a laser pointer, you've made use of technology pioneered by Jerry Woodall, distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, Davis. Woodall's work, begun in the 1960s at IBM Research, is the basis for cheap, energy-efficient light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, and lasers.
